Gridlock

During rush hour, highways can be a bumper to bumper crawl for what seems to be hours on end. Many of us are on a tight schedule that must be met and really don’t have time for stop and go traffic - not to mention the workout on our clutch leg. When the congestion finally lets loose and gets rolling, then vehicles are everywhere and moving at a much faster speed. One little mistake by anyone can cause an accident. This happens day in and day out in a driver’s life. Sometimes it can seem to be total chaos all the time. What do you do to find peace in all this chaos? Maybe a better question would be: do you have any peace in all this chaos? We can help. Comment here.

Radical Mercy

Recently my nephew wanted to help by backing my car into the garage, and we all know how difficult backing can be. We both felt sick when he accidently hit the work bench and did hundreds of dollars of damage to my recently purchased car. He felt terrible and wanted to pay for the repairs, which would have meant more loans for this college student. It was decision time: show mercy or let him pay the price? We all make mistakes and sometimes we just need someone to extend grace to us. Has anyone ever done this for you? We’d love to talk more about this. Comment here.

All Night Long

It really was no different than any other delivery when I had to travel to Chicago to make a special delivery. The process got started very late and it was an extremely long night with absolutely no time to sleep. The delivery was scheduled for five o’clock in the morning and it was on time. As I sat there exhausted, I listened to a couple of birds singing as the sun came up. It was very peaceful to just be still, watch the sun and listen to those birds sing, even though the night had been very long. What is it you look to when your nights are long? What do you turn to when the days are chaotic? Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Walk With Personality

While out on the road, you run into many different types of personalities. Maybe it’s during pickups and deliveries, or maybe it’s right in your own dispatcher’s office. Some people are more outspoken, while others are quieter in their interactions. What makes one person mad can easily be overlooked by another. We all have been created alike physically, but it’s good that we have different temperaments. It keeps life interesting! Try to accept the personality differences you encounter in others. It’s beneficial to do this as it helps to reduce stress. Think about this the next time you are interacting with someone who is different than you. Comment here.

Give Peace A Chance

I read a story about a painting contest where artists were challenged to try and capture “peace” the best way they could. One artist painted a tranquil lake at sunset, while another painted a home covered with a new blanket of snow, untouched by anything. The winner of the contest, though, painted a picture of a very powerful waterfall raging and splashing about, while off to the side a mother Robin was sitting with her young in a small nest. Your life may look like the lake at sunset or it may look like the raging waterfall at times, but what do you do and where do you go to find “peace”. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Create an Awareness of Your Habits

Every Saturday morning, bright and early, when I was growing up my dad would take me to the doctor to get an allergy shot. I was extremely allergic to trees, flowers, pollen, cats, dogs and many other things Since then, I’ve learned how to deal with my allergies and now know what to avoid and when to avoid it. Some of our bad habits are similar to allergies. They can cause us to not feel good at times, and they seem to come around on a regular basis. Our habits can be like allergies, but if you learn what areas you need to avoid and get to know certain times they seem to appear, handling them will be easier, and you’ll feel much better. Slightly Off Course

As my daughter and I were traveling recently, she accidentally hit a button on our GPS and changed our destination. Neither of us realized it at the time. While we were still traveling in the same general direction, our specific location was miles away. Something didn’t seem right when I began to notice city lights and tall buildings; I then realized we were slightly off course. Do you feel this way sometimes with life? You know you’re going somewhere, but aren’t sure you are heading in the right direction? Give us a call. We’d like to talk about this with you. Comment here.

What Does Your Bumper Sticker Say?

It’s hard not to notice the variety of bumper stickers on vehicles today. Everything from yellow ‘Support Our Troops’ ribbons to soccer balls to political slogans to ‘I Love My Dachshund’ stickers. People like for others to know of their hobbies, likes, dislikes, and interests. Displaying these stickers is one way to do that. We all want to be known. What do you want others to know about you? If you feel as if no one knows you right now, give us a call. We’d like to get to know you. Comment here.

At the Car Wash

After many weeks of snow, it was great to have a warm, sunny day to get my filthy car to the car wash. As I waited in line, I watched the truck in front of me go from grimy gray to shiny silver. As my car was getting sudsy and clean on the outside, I started to notice how dirty the inside looked. This is similar to our personal life. We may be struggling with something we don’t want others to see, but continue to do all kinds of things to look good on the outside: nice clothes, nice car, the right words, or a fake smile at the right time. If you have something you are keeping inside and need to talk to someone, please contact us. We’d love to help. Comment here.

Get By With A Little Help From Your Friends

I have one friend from high school I occasionally keep in touch with and my closest friend has been a part of my life for the past nineteen years. Maintaining friendships takes time and effort. Who are your friends? Is there someone who needs to hear from you? Take the time to reconnect or keep in touch with your friends. They are important. If you would like to talk more about this or need help in this area, let us know. Comment here.

Emotional Activity

A physical wellness coach once said “Build physical activity into all your work and play.” I agree with that. My own doctor has told me when I go to stores, restaurants, truck stops, etc., to park in the furthest spot away from the building and walk. Well, let me suggest that we build “emotional activity” into all our work and play. How can we do that? Always be on the lookout for ways to address the thoughts, struggles, and difficulties you are having. Come up with a plan you can follow to exercise your mind. Give us a call if we can help. Comment here.

Crushed but Not Destroyed

I was recently working on my vehicle when I smashed and cut my thumb on a sharp piece of glass. It very quickly bled and soon began to bruise. The first thing I did was apply pressure and look for a bandage. I was prepared and had some close at hand. It’s good to be prepared. What if it had been a bruised heart? There are times when we get hurt, but it’s on the inside. What do you do? Do you have any ‘bandages’ nearby when your heart gets bruised? Be prepared. Comment here.

How Good Of a Father Are You?

My college graduation gift to my son was to take him on a train trip across the country. Due to family circumstances, it was just the two of us. We had a wonderful trip riding the California Zephyr for three days and sleeping in a Pullman car. At one point during the journey, my son said to me, "You know, Dad, this is the longest time I have been with you that I didn’t get in trouble.” Wow! How had I been treating my son? What kind of father had I been to him? Happily, we now have a great relationship, even though he and his wife live several thousand miles away and we mostly communicate by phone and email. My son grew up before I realized I could have done it differently. Driver, what kind of father are you? What will you do differently? Comment here.

Beware of Overload

Drivers should be on constant alert regarding the weight of their trucks. Overweight or overload can be damaging to the highways and your equipment…not to mention your wallet. Regarding our physical wellness, experts will tell you to look for ways to keep your weight down and to push, pull or lift to keep your muscles fit. The same also holds true for our emotional wellness. Work your mind in a positive way so that you can keep your mind from overload. Think about those things that are true, honorable, right, and pure. This will keep you in excellent condition. Comment here.

Garbage In, Garbage Out

Dieticians tell us to eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy and protein. If we do this, along with monitoring our snacks, we will look and feel healthy. The same thing applies to what we allow into our hearts. What you let in is what you become. When you allow unhealthy things to enter your heart and mind, do you notice things about yourself that aren’t so appealing? Don’t let the garbage in, keep it clean. Comment here.

Million Dollar Question

Do certain questions about life plague you? Questions such as, ‘Where is the life I have lost while trying to live?’ ‘Why do I seek knowledge, but have no wisdom?’ ‘Why do I search for pleasure, but have no joy?’ ‘Why do I look for happiness, but have no satisfaction?’ ‘And why, as a truck driver, do I work so hard to make a living, but have no life?’ There are answers to questions such as these. Counterbalance

Most tractor trailers today must weigh beneath eighty-thousand pounds. The front tires on the tractor must not weigh over twelve-thousand pounds and the two back tires must not weigh more than thirty-four thousand pounds. Just like these trucks, we, too, must have an even balance in our lives to function properly. Do you sense that something is off-kilter in your life? Give us a call. Comment here.

Phantom Pain or Real?

It’s the time of year when outdoor activities, such as planting a garden or cleaning and polishing your rims and tanks, begin again. For some of us, along with these activities and chores, comes back pain. Or maybe you have an emotional ache that creeps up on you. This kind of pain can come at any time of the year and isn’t subject to working outdoors. Have a plan, or remedy if you will, when these times come. Are you prepared? Comment here.

Mutt and Jeff

Do you remember the cartoon strip Mutt and Jeff?  One day half-pint Jeff says to giant Mutt, “I heard you say that you are a self-made man.” Mutt, looking down his rather large nose, replies, “Yes I am.” Jeff says, “Why then did you make yourself look like that?” Some drivers believe they are self made men and proudly put on a macho façade. They really come off as self-centered and closed-minded.  My question is, “Why would anyone want to look like that?”

What Do You Do For Easter?

No blog will be posted tomorrow Friday, April 2, 2010 in order to allow our employees to spend time with their families. We will resume blog posting on Monday, April 5, 2010. Drivers Wellness hopes you have a wonderful Easter.

We see signs of it in truck stops and in stores where we deliver. Easter Lilies, chocolate bunnies, and egg coloring kits.  As a kid, I remember hunting for colored eggs in our backyard on Easter Sunday. That’s what we did for Easter. What does Easter mean to you? Comment here.
